BLAGRRA: Rapid Bleaching Assessment Protocol |
|
The BLAGRRA Protocol is simple and rapid, easily mastered method of assessing coral health during ecological emergencies. The ability to quickly assess many transect/site allows repeated coverage of large areas, which is essential in monitoring the immediate and delayed mortality of stony corals during and following mass bleaching events, outbreaks of diseases and other acute impacts. The BLAGRRA methodology is available in two forms: (1) the full method consists of summary line-intercept measurements as well as belt transects for assessing individual corals; (2) the line-intercept only method is a simplified protocol which provides less data but is very rapid and does not require knowledge of coral species names. |

Two set of BLAGRRA surveys were performed in response to the 2005 Caribbean bleaching event. The first was in Jan-2006 and a follow-up survey was taken in May/Jun-2006. These surveys cover selected sites in Barbados, Martinique, and the British Virgin Islands. The results of these assessments are available below. |
