We are pleased to announce that the 1st Annual AGRRA Workshop will be held here at the Main Campus of the University of Miami beginning Tuesday morning June 2 and ending at noon on Saturday, June 6. Two days will be spent hearing case histories of reef assessment and two days are reserved for field work applying the Proposed Protocol. The aims of the Workshop are to discuss examples of rapid assessment, review the Proposed AGRRA Protocol and make what changes are appropriate, and lay plans for assessing the Reefs of the Americas.
We are most anxious to have participants who have had experience in rapid assessment of benthos and/or fish, but we will welcome applications from others who are interested in participating in AGRRA. The registration fee of $100 is to cover the costs of two days of diving and lunches.
As the first step in applying to participate we ask for a brief summary of no more than a page indicating any relevant experience or special interests. Please include mention of Atlantic reefs areas with which you are familiar and cite any of your publications that are relevant to the goals of AGRRA. If you are prepared to present the results of an assessment, please provide a brief description of the area, what methods you used and the results.
All those who participate will be asked to prepare an Abstract to be submitted by May 1, 1998.
The Workshop will be held at our University's Main Campus in Coral Gables, 20 minutes from the Miami International Airport. Participants will be housed in the student residence halls and meetings will be held in classrooms. Single rooms with private bath are $34/night plus 6.5% tax; private room with shared bath is $31. plus tax; double occupancy with shared bath is $31/person/night. Inexpensive meals are available in the Cafeteria and there are several restaurants within walking distance of the campus.
We recommend that participants arrive on or before Monday June 1 to be prepared for the Opening of the Workshop June 2. The preceding weekend is a holiday (Memorial Day) and it may be difficult to find airline space on Sunday.
American Airlines is providing 15 tickets @$250 each for travel to Miami. These are reserved for participants from countries other than the United States.
At this time there are no funds for partial support of travel expenses, but we are making an effort to find financial aid. On the chance that there will be some funds, we ask you to indicate if your participation is dependent on funding and if so, how much.
An indication of your interest in participating in the Workshop and whether or not funding is required and if so, how much.
A brief statement of no more than one page summarizing your involvement in reef assessment and/or your experience in the region.
Any other comments that you feel are relevant.
